How to Apply For a Duplicate Driving License in India?


Have you lost your original driving license or has been damaged or mutilated? Are you willing to apply for a new driving license(duplicate)? This article will give you all the necessary details and the procedure to apply for a new duplicate driving license.

Some may lose their original accidentally or theft of wallet. As soon as you lose your original, you must give a police complaint and ask to prepare an FIR report. This certificate/report will be needed as one of the document while applying for a duplicate license. Below are the list of all the important documents that are needed while applying for a duplicate license in the Regional Transport Office.

Necessary documents to be carried

  • Carry the L.L.D application form with all the necessary details filled in it.
  • Xerox copy of your original driving license. The driving license number will be needed while filling the L.L.D form. I hope you have a xerox copy of your original driving license. This copy will be asked at the time of submission if RTO.
  • Total of 3 passport size photographs.
  • A self deceleration certificate.
  • ID proof with your photo attached and on residential proof is must(Ration card, electricity bill, voter card, passport).
  • One xerox copy of the FIR report that states that your original copy has been stolen.
Note: If you have the original copy with you which has been damaged very badly, then you must return it before applying for the duplicate copy.

How to apply?


You need to carry all the above mentioned documents to the RTO(Regional Transport Office) which is located at your area. Make sure that you are carrying all the documents when you leave for RTO along with your own vehicle. Once you handover all your documents, you will be asked for a simple driving test to test your skills again along with some other basic tests like traffic rules and regulations, traffic signals, driving skills, vehicle systems etc. Once you have cleared and passed the test, you will be said to leave and you're done! You will get your duplicate driving license within 7 working days and the timings are from 9 A.M to 1 P.M

Fee Details:


The fee details in order to obtain a duplicate driving license is as follows
License fee: Rs. 100 + Service charges Rs.100
Total Rs. 200

However, the fee structure may vary from city to city. Below are the fee details of 3 different cities.
  • Fee structure in Delhi is Rs. 200 + service charges
  • Fee structure in Kerala is Rs. 200 + service charges 
  • Fee structure in Andhra Pradesh is Rs 15 to Rs. 40
